Horror music works best when it withholds. I build dread from small sounds like prepared strings, sub-bass rumbles and breath-like textures, then let silence do the rest. Thriller scoring adds pulse without release: a clock underneath the scene that keeps ticking.
A scoring approach built on restraint
The most effective horror cues rarely announce themselves. I start with the emotional core of the scene, the feeling the audience should have without understanding it yet, and design the score around that gap. A swell is more frightening when it waits. A sting lands harder when the cue has been holding its breath.
Thriller scores keep that same discipline but add forward motion: repetitive figures, ticking percussion, low drones that feel like pressure rising. The goal is always to serve the picture, not to show off the production.
